Preparing for the Future

We are in the midst of a period of great change in the workplace. Hierarchies are flattening, networks are gaining power, the traditional “American Dream” is being re-examined, and unprecedented access has created a culture of empowerment.

On top of these universal changes, each generation—Boomers, Gen Xers, Millennials, and Gen Zers— are all embarking on new life stages. What they expect from their leaders and workplaces is constantly evolving.

The time has come to challenge conventional thinking and explore bold new approaches to recruitment, retention and engagement. Supported with cutting edge research and category leading case studies and humor, this talk will take a deep dive into the emerging trends shaping our workplaces.

State of the Industry // The Future of Work and the Changing Role of CRE

Advancing technology isn’t just evolving employee expectations and the way we work, but also calling into question the role the physical workplace will play into the future. This panel will explore how companies are thinking about the monumental changes that lie ahead, while still meeting the immediate needs of the organization. As it becomes increasingly difficult to attract and retain good talent, corporate real estate leaders will need to imagine new possibilities for the physical space that optimize productivity and allow people to produce work that’s meaningful and rewarding.

What Makes a Phenomenal Workplace Experience?

In the quest to create the best workplace experience to hire and retain the greatest talent available, companies around the world continue to try to find new and novel ways to give them the slightest advantage over the competition. At LinkedIn we are using an active workplace experimentation program and our workplace laboratory to understand what causes more of a distraction than providing additional energy. We are seeking to uncover which types of environments help teams collaborate most successfully. We are studying how individuals work to understand what helps them to achieve the best work version of themselves. We are trying to understand the human nature behind routines to figure out when we should disrupt them. And we are exploring choice in the workplace, when there is too much and when there is too little.

For us the conversation is not about the amenities themselves, its about human nature and how we can help unleash our greatest potential, through providing a phenomenal workplace experience.

Stress: Portrait of a Killer

Stress is killing more than productivity. Seventy-five percent of employees rank work as the number one cause of high stress in their lives. Heart attacks increase by 20% on Mondays. Professor Jefferey Pfeffer’s research found the workplace now ranks as the 5th leading cause of death. Calvin and Rex will present the research from “The Healthy Workplace Nudge.” It provides the causal link between stress, disengagement, and rising health costs. We also share how the corporate real estate and facilities team at GoDaddy’s tackled stress head-on through an innovative partnership with ISS. Together they transformed the traditional role of facilities support into Experience Management. Calvin and Rex will walk you through a short exercise you can take home called the Nudge Audit. MindShift’s research continues in a new effort called Project Unwind. We conclude with a window into the future.

A Human-Centric Approach to Workplace Technology

We used to have a clear delineation between work and home; the office was a physical location, technology was inflexible and normal work hours mattered. Today, we are always on, always moving and our workplace goes beyond the physical. Work has fundamentally changed, too, while dividing opinion on productivity. The sharing economy and rise of contingent workers are adding complexity by creating a talent pool more diverse and competitive than ever. While the benefits of technology are undeniable, organizations need to pay more attention than ever to the employer/employee value exchange in order to build a work environment that engages and empowers people and ultimately unlocks value. Culture, experience and trust are key.

Rethinking the Open Office
Is the workplace ever finished when business is always changing around it?
As the office goes through different trends, what was once a very cellular and enclosed group of offices has become open seas of workstations. The pendulum has swung from one side to the other, but neither iteration adequately supports the activities and ideation that needs to happen within companies. For almost 40 years, M Moser has explored the behaviors necessary to promote key objectives within the work environment. We’ve used this approach to develop environments that support the culture and goals of the business, while enhancing the experience and well-being of its employees.
In this session, we will explore how a behavioral-based design approach can best align business objectives with tangible environments that drive the interactions and focus necessary to help people do their best work.

Improving Building Acoustics for More Productive Environments

The reality is open plans aren’t going anywhere soon. Individually assigned private offices require considerably more space and limit options for reconfiguration, but the pitfalls of poorly executed open plan design are well documented. The solution to the conflict between concentration and collaboration in the open office rests on improving the way that a space performs. Drawing upon findings from its Living Laboratory, Saint-Gobain/CertainTeed will reveal how using the right materials in a system can create spaces that are ideal for the activities that take place within them. Determining whether we need to extend the distance of which intelligible voice can travel like in a training room or reduce the distance in the open work area, the truth is that one size does not fit all situations but when you find the right solutions it will lead to happier employees and better work outcomes.
